This play changed my perspective and management of my ain career as an actress. Since reading Birch's play, which is both a feminist manifesto and experimental theatre piece in i, I accept delved deeper into the history and current earth of feminist theatre. Cutting, Shameless, Cringed more often than not. I truly was not prepared for what this play had in store.
Revolt vehemently rejects the expectations and responsibilities assigned to and assumed by women - in the most delicious manner possible. A cohort of incredible female characters who just practice non give a shit.

As a adult female myself, I found this play so satisfying. The characters said and did all the things that, although cringey, had me rooting for them on the sideline. I vicariously lived through

As a woman myself, I constitute this play so satisfying. The characters said and did all the things that, although cringey, had me rooting for them on the sideline. I vicariously lived through these nasty women and flirted with the radical ideas presented in the play. Volition definitely claiming y'all. Enjoy!

It really is just staggeringly bright. Class as politics, linguistic communication every bit weapon, playtext equally manifesto.

Peradventure I'1000 just non that into absurdist theatre. Like this play, I struggled a lot with Caryl Churchill'south Top Girls, mainly because I was reading information technology rather than watching it. Reading plays in this fashion might exist harsh, but I mostly see them equally instruction manuals for a finished product, and in some ways reading them can spark off your imagination into all the different ways they can be performed.

What perhaps is almost frustrated most Revolt. She Said. Defection Again. is that I observe it very difficult

Maybe I'm just not that into absurdist theatre. Like this play, I struggled a lot with Caryl Churchill's Top Girls, mainly because I was reading it rather than watching information technology. Reading plays in this way might be harsh, but I generally run into them as instruction manuals for a finished product, and in some ways reading them can spark off your imagination into all the different means they can be performed.

What perhaps is most frustrated about Defection. She Said. Revolt Again. is that I notice it very difficult to picture this finished product. In that location are stylistic techniques similar stutterings, overlapping dialogue, and pauses put in by the playwright that I usually observe annoying and unnecessary. And on the polar reverse of the spectrum there are a lot of things that are very vague nigh this play. It's unclear as to who the characters are, or how many there are in whatsoever given scenes. No one even has names until halfway through the play, and and so the names go over again. There is definitely characterisation here, simply it'due south a nightmare trying to recognise them without any characters. I don't really understand the purpose of it, as a similar issue could be washed with giving each grapheme a letter of the alphabet or a number.

This isn't really my thing. With the Churchill comparing, equally much as I disliked Top Girls I found that her piece of work, and absurdist theatre in general, opened upwardly to me a flake more with some of her other more than zanier and funnier works like Deject Nine and Far Away. So I really hope that I'll read another stuff by Birch that will open me up a chip more, and if I did get an opportunity to run into this I definitely would.

Holy. Fuck.

I take never read something so seething, so brilliantly searing, as this play. It is e'er a chip of a challenge to acclimate to Alice Birch'southward writing style (structurally, that is) but once I did, I was internally SCREAMING "Delight SOMEONE, READ THIS! PERFORM THIS!" Since I don't have friends who are into theater, I've reserved all of my thrill for this review.

And I guess since no one has dared to produce this in my area, I'll be doing that as well.

Thrilling, radical deconstruction of societal oppression of women and what it would accept to start anew.

Plays similar this one (in detail) are but and so difficult to rate or evaluate. This ones yearns to be seen or performed, rather than read. Characters don't have names, and even when they do, it'south not all that helpful. At that place's no distinction between who is supposed to be talking when. Despite my confusion, it is a really fascinating play. Its style is reminiscent of Valerie Solanas--information technology's that pointed, sharp, blatant. Birch takes everyday situations (or are they?) and blows them to an extreme. It'due south feminist, but errs very much to the extreme. Perhaps that'due south why I didn't vibe with it equally much. Albeit, some of the moments are very well composed and thought-provoking. Just non actually my thing.

Who knew that life could be so awful.

The first deed was absolutely fantastic, loved how the characters had no names, it created such a playfully chaotic space for exploration and I imagine in rehearsal a lot of experimentation could be done with the genders of characters/actors. That said, I think Birch, as she rightly said, didn't want to make sense and I somewhat enjoyed the sickening frustration of Birch's ending cause by my brain simply desiring structure. This play is a wonderfully written play about experiences of women. Experiences that I'm sure at least ix out of 10, if not 10/10, have gone through. This Rages. This is righteous. This is anarchic. This is absurd. And this deserves to be seen (information technology reads like it), merely alas I've only read information technology... possibly it'due south out on the intertubes somewhere? Anyway, very good stuff! Ends brilliantly, especially Acts 3 & 4...

Who knew life could be and so atrocious."

Nails information technology all!

Rereading this is very helpful as you are braced for the sheer level of experimentation, just equally with all of Alice Birch'south writing, it gets into your pare and delights in beingness as uncomfortable as possible.

What it lacks in terns of humanity, especially when compared with her later on play Beefcake of a Suicide, it more than makes up for with its ideas that spring from our social expectations rather than generalising about them.

Information technology is certainly a must read - it completely blows your listen when you lot are used to traditional drama. Fifty-fifty if yous are familiar with modern plays this is something else ... I think there are no words for it ...
Information technology is exceptional!
Still, only 3 stars of v because I've read other plays which affected me fifty-fifty more than.

I was a scrap nervous nearly this class reading because experimental theater is usually not my thing. All the same, for the most part I found this well thought out and extremely funny. I was not expecting the jokes to hitting that hard peculiarly considering I wasn't seeing information technology exist performed. There were some odd parts I didn't go just I really was shocked at how hilarious this was.

Yeah, this one was weird. Just a general note: if your play has no characters and unlike parts are denoted by dashes, maybe check to brand certain the dashes are in the right places?? Nosotros should non take to get a long electronic mail from our instructor telling us how to decypher the typos??? Even so fun

This is now my favorite play. All centered effectually the idea that girls who autumn in line seldom make history, the scenes seem random upon first read. All the same, after having studied the text and acted out 1 of the scenes, I beloved to find the consistencies throughout information technology, seeing how information technology all connects. I would honey to speak with Alice Birch about her thought process behind the play considering the more yous read it, the more vivid you notice the writing and the more questions you have.
